People’s sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are human rights. They are fundamental to health and well-being, gender equality, democracy, peace and security and sustainable development. SRHR is grounded in the right and the ability of all individuals to decide over their own bodies and to live healthy and productive lives.
Globally, as well as within the EU, countries differ greatly in how easily people can access contraception, abortion services, education or gynaecological care. While some states offer liberal regulations and strong healthcare systems, others have legal barriers, long waiting times or even severe restrictions.
Another key issue is self-determination. SRHR means that people can freely decide about their own bodies – including if and when they want to have children.
Social inequality is also an important factor. Young people, people with low incomes, migrants and those living in rural areas are often particularly affected.
Aim of this Toolkit
This toolkit is designed for youth leaders, CSOs, feminist and queer rights networks and SRHR advocates. On the one hand, it aims to make the complexity, relevance and different dimensions of SRHR accessible to young people. On the other hand, it seeks to empower and motivate them to actively engage in this field themselves. Concrete guidance on campaign planning and best-practice examples helps users take immediate action.
